QH: How did you get your start? and how did you decide what genre you wanted to go into?
I started out pursuing acting and modeling in mid to late 2005, more of on a part-time basis. I was born in Guelph, Ontario, Canada, and grew up in Gainesville, Florida. I have a B.S. in Retail Merchandising and a Graduate Gemologist diploma from GIA, which I both received in 2002. After my education, I moved to Los Angeles. In a short time, the pull of the entertainment industry was to much to control, and I decided to look into avenues as to how to get into acting, modeling, and possibly music as well.

Pursuing this industry has not always been easy, nor as it been seem less. I booked a couple of commercials, starting in 2007, and things like smaller independent films, including appearing on talk show segments as a model.  It wasn’t until I really started pursuing modeling, that a lot of doors and opportunities began to open for me, which was in 2009. Through modeling, I was able to really meet more people who shared a lot of the same visions and common denomenators as me. I have experience with walking in fashion shows for a lot of LA based fashion designers, including official LA Fashion Week Millinery Guild in 2010, in addition to modeling in shows sponsored by major brands. Doing repeated fashion shows and photo shoots, helped get me comfortable performing in front of other people and in front of the camera.
I also recently started doing hosting, and this has helped my on-camera presence. I did red carpet interviews this year, and had the opportunity to attend some great events! One of my favorite jobs included hosting LA Fashion Week for designers Tina Summers and Hollywaas, covered by Wireimage press agency, held at the Agenda Lofts, March 2010. Right after, I hosted the Gap Project Fashion Show in downtown Los Angeles.
My love of electronic music is what really made me want to attempt to record a vocal trance song. I love electronic music because it is when I feel free! The beats immediately uplift me, and take me out of what fog I may be feeling. I love the lyrics in these type of songs because they are memorable, without being too dark and depressing. There are some really amazing DJ’s out there who can turn a great song into an amazing song with this type of genre. Even listening to main stream radio, more and more trance type beats are used to create awesome club music.
I found producer, Alexander Adhami, who has an impressive list of credits, and he was really willing to work with me, and create a song that we felt would be catchy, uplifting, with beats that are easy to dance to and listen to, for my first single, So Delicious, in 2010. I learned a lot through him, and had a great time making this song! I also need to thank my friend, Glass The Tramp, for giving me my first voice lessons. I am so happy that this song has been brought to life!

QH: What are some of your strong musical influences?
Some of my strong musical influences have come from the streams on online stations, such as Digitally Imported.FM, vocal trance station. I love groups like Signal Runners, Calienda, and singers like Anda Adam. I really like DJ Tiesto and David Guetta. I love the compilation disks that Ultra has, in addition to some others. Of course, I like Lady Gaga (the Alejandro song is my favorite), and Jennifer Lopez, and Freeez. I really like the song, He’s a Pretender, by High Inergy, because I love the beats.  Latoya Jackson did a remake of this song, which is also good. I found out about the Brazilian pop singer, Xuxa, in my youth, and loved her style!

QH: What separates you from other female artists out there? and how do you think you can evolve in this progressive male dominating industry?
What would separate me as an artist from other people would be the fact that I am constantly thinking of new things in store for my next single. I want my songs to have a distinct feel and lyrics to them. I want them to sound different from each other, but with a trademark style. I want my lyrics to be easy for people to remember, so they can just enjoy listening to the songs, whether it be at the club, or in the car. I want people to have fun with my music!

I think that the only way to evolve within this industry, or in any other industry, is you must be flexible, and roll with the punches. Peoples tastes change, including mine! I want to be true to what I am feeling at the time, so the art I put out will reflect that. Rigidness spells defeat, as they say.  Not everyone is going to like you, or  like what you are doing, and that is fine. Any one that tries to discourage you, perhaps you should distance yourself from them.  Once you accept that, you have freedom over what you want to do. Second guessing yourself and your confidence, will only trap you.

QH: What are some really effective marketing and promotional tools you have used and are currently utilizing?
I feel lucky that in 2011, we have all of this social networking and marketing as tools to promote yourself, business and endeavors. I am of course on Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, and   run my own website, www.emmazerner.com. I also have my own blog, www.emmazerner.blogspot.com, which was featured in March 2010 issue of 944 magazine, thanks to my friend, LA Fashion Snob Web blog, Heather Petrey.  Starting a blog is an easy, simple, and very effective tool to bring attention to what you are doing. The blogs already have templates, and I am hopeless with HTML, so it has aided me enormously. I have also taken advantage of the simplicity of Tunecore, which I was able to distribute my single to various outlets. There are  other great sites, such as Reverbnation.  And of course, the support of my family and friends!

QH: What message are you trying to send to listeners through your music?
Some of the messages I am trying to send through my music, would be drop those problems and worries for a bit, and let yourself unwind and have a good time. Love of course is always on the mind.  I was thinking about a particular scenario when this single, So Delicious, was being made. I think that if you listen to the lyrics, this is an all to familiar scenario. I want my music to be relatable, but with high energy and dance beats, so instead of leaving the person depressed or angry, they leave with a good time, instead!

QH: What are some  struggles you had to face as far as your music career and how have you overcome them?
There are many issues I had to face and am still facing. I am not a veteran at this. I was a business major. Getting the support I needed to achieve my goal, and seeking those out who believe in me, and want to work with me. Staying positive, and keeping a business mind.   I wasn’t sure what to do at the beginning, kind of dead in the water. The competition is fierce, and I think that people may be reluctant to help, because it just means more competition for them. I think that the more time spent in this industry, or in the entertainment industry in general, you will learn what you need to drop, and what you need more of.  I think you must have the strength to keep pursuing and using different methods to achieve your goals, and align with people who uplift you, and truly care about you.

QH: What should other female artists be careful of in this industry?
Some advice I would give to other females in the industry, would  be of course, stay positive, and be confident. If you doubt yourself, then other people will start to doubt you. Everyday, do something that would advance your career, whether it be a trade photo shoot, sending someone an email with your music, working on your website, or getting business cards made, so every time you go out, you can leave your impression. Networking, and working on an online presence. You never know who you may meet, but you must be ready!

QH: What essentials do you feel are necessary for a good development and management team?
The essentials for a team that you are working with, would definetly include their expertise in the industry. Whoever you choose to work with, must have some verifiable evidence that they are experienced, and they know what they are doing. There are far too many embelishers and posers around that will do nothing for you. It is very easy to get sucked in by a smooth talker. They must have credentials, and clear communication, and be on the same page.

I also think practicing, evolving in your art and becoming better, will not only help you focus on what your goals are at hand, but they will also sustain the satisfaction of following your goals, and achieving your dreams. I think all the energy you put toward something, will pay off in the long run.
QH: What are your future plans and projects we have to look forward to?
I would like my first single, So Delicious, to land on a compilation disc(s). I would like to be able to broaden my audience with it. By the end of the year, I want to begin my second single, and then some! I already have a lot of ideas in mind for it, so I am excited! I also have a lot of projects coming up. When they are finalized, they will be posted to my official website, www.emmazerner.com. I currently have a featured part in the webseries, Pink Slip, and we will be filming three more episodes of that, which I am really looking forward to. I also did a bunch of photo shoots, including one for one of my favorite boutiques I model for, Simon’s Tailoring Boutique.  I cannot wait to see the results.
