QH: How did you get your start? and how did you decide what genre you wanted to go into?
I, Lachi, have always been playing music and dedicated my life to it once I moved to NYC in 2006. I have never really boxed myself into a genre, which has proven great now since radio has embraced mixing and cross-over of genres.
QH: What are some of your strong musical influences?
Some of my musical influences include a mix of The Beatles, Lauryn Hill, Mozart, Yanni, Radiohead and Ella Fitzgerald.
QH: What separates you from other female artists out there? and how do you think you can evolve in this progressive male dominating industry?
Our urban-pop yet often heavy rock mixed songs actually fit much better in a line-up of all male oriented bands because we steer away from lyrics of love and relationships. Though I am female, the rest of the band is male, which also helps, but I think my greatest strength is the fact that I’ve learned in such a male-heavy industry, it’s best to be humble and have no ego, just an inner pride for your accomplishments, never to be imposed upon anyone else if you can help it. Men like to fight with their egos, so when a woman steps up to the plate to fight with the same weapon, she’s dismissed as a bitch. Yet bring in a strong woman that doesn’t fight with ego yet still possesses wit, savvy, skill and strength…and you get a bunch of confused men that are still very happy and willing to work with you. Humility is always the best weapon, an armor of peace.
QH: What are some really effective marketing and promotional tools you have used and are currently utilizing?
A strategic business and budget plan is key. Facebook/Twitter/Reverb upkeep must be constant and engaging along with interactive content like videos, poles, pictures.
QH: What message are you trying to send to listeners through your music?
A message of inner-strength, acceptance of faults, embracing of ones-self despite insecurity, personal growth, strength, humility and love…but most importantly realness with ones self and with others.
QH: What are some struggles you had to face as far as your music career and how have you over come them? Losing my ego and embracing humility. I can list off all individual cases of squabbles, mishaps, betrayals of management, and deceits I’ve faced, but the lesson that was repeatedly learned and harshly implemented, yet a wonderful and perfect change…was the dropping of my ego and pride, and the promise to work as humbly yet strong as I can.
QH: What should other female artists be careful of in this industry?
Holding grudges and being petty. Take everything said at face value and people will learn to deal with you that way as well. Also, if you don’t want to wear a miniskirt….don’t. It’s your body, and if you’re seen as trashy, only you are seen as trashy, not the person who told you to look trashy…or what have you.
QH: What essentials do you feel are necessary for a good development and management team?
Connections. Period.
QH: What does the future hold and what aspirations do you intend on embellishing throughout this year? Completing our next album.
